Maybe you’re old enough to remember exaggerated 1980s fashion. Or perhaps you’re young enough that Hedi Slimane’s final show for Saint Laurent this season (pictured below) was your first taste of that decade’s OTT proportions. Either way, the glam 80s throwback trend is one that’s set to dominate for the rest of this year. Here’s a little styling inspiration from the fashion decade that’s got designers going large this season.

Bananarama These Brit girls sure could hold a tune and their style defined 80s pop: crop tops, pedal pushers, the miniest of skirts, logo tees, wide leather belts and hoop earrings. Grab a can of hairspray and a scrappy hair bow for that so-don’t-care, messed up ‘do the girls owned and you’re part way to the disco.

Grace Jones Jamaican girl Jones left the Caribbean in the 60s to model in New York, but it was in the 80s that she carved out a successful career for herself as a singer and actor. She never shied away from being bold and her iconic look remains today: afro flat-top, lightning bolt-inspired makeup, mysterious cloaks and over-angular suits with shoulder pads for days.

Demi Moore She ruled the style stakes in the 80s and continues to reinvent herself today, but back in her Brat Pack years, we couldn’t get enough of Moore’s flowing mane of brunette hair, cropped jackets and harem pants worn with converse and a sultry attitude.

Madonna Before she was Madge, she was a mega-hot babe carving up the dance floors in New York City. While she’s had many a look over the decades, her cool-girl 80s style has us all crazy in love with lace fingerless gloves, rah-rah skirts, fishnet stockings, scrunchies and statement tees. Perfect her look with a beauty spot, mouthful of gum and a harem of male dancers.

Jerry Hall The original supermodel was beauty personified; the golden mane she so proudly paraded, the Texan drawl that had men falling over themselves and those legs that resembled a stairway to haute heaven. The regular magazine cover girl always dressed to impress and added glamour to 80s evening dresses with her pins coated in sheer black stockings and toes slipped into kitten heels for a night out at Studio 54.

Olivia Newton John Our Liv sure could rock a leotard. She showed us how to get physical in bright tights, high cut one-pieces and terry-towelling headbands. Put Let’s Get Physical on your playlist and slip into your leg warmers and Lycra for a workout like never before. Can you hear your body talk?

Michelle Pfeiffer As the female movie superstar of the 80s, starring in classics like Scarface and Tequila Sunrise, Pfeiffer is the 80s girl you want to be. Crazy beautiful, with a killer figure and man-magnet mystique, girlfriend could work a satin jumpsuit and classic bob like no other.
