It won the Prix du Jury at Cannes, and now the trailer for American Honey hints at a movie that will impress an audience beyond the film critics.

Starring Shia LeBeouf, Riley Keough and newcomer Sasha Lane, American Honey tells the story of teenage runaway Star (Lane) who joins a group of misfits travelling across America selling magazine subscriptions, getting up to mischief and learning about life.

The trailer is set to Bruce Springsteen’s cover of Suicide’s Dream Baby Dream, The Boss’ mournful tones hinting at a grittiness and melancholy in the film, but also literally signalling there’s hope for the characters as they pursue the ‘American dream’.

Made in America by British director Andrea Arnold, American Honey debuted to mostly positive reviews at Cannes, with Guy Lodge from Variety describing it as: “Part dreamy millennial picaresque, part distorted tapestry of Americana and part exquisitely illustrated iTunes musical, Honey daringly commits only to the loosest of narratives across its luxurious 162-minute running time. Yet it’s constantly, engrossingly active, spinning and sparking and exploding in cycles like a Fourth of July Catherine wheel.”

Director Arnold scouted lead star Sasha Lane after spotting her laying on the beach and deciding she had the right look for Star, and if the critical reception is anything to go by, American Honey could mean big things for the 20-year-old from Texas.

American Honey hits cinemas in the US next month with an Australian release date to follow.
