In November, Tom Ford told U.S. Talk Show The View he had no interest in dressing future first Lady Melania Trump, an opinion aligned with fellow designers Phillip Lim and Derek Lam. Now, the President-Elect has told Fox News that his wife is not even a fan of Ford’s designs.

“I was asked to dress [Melania] quite a few years ago and I declined,” Ford said. “She’s not necessarily my image. Other then that fact that I’m a Democrat and voted for Hillary… she shouldn’t be wearing my clothes, they’re too expensive. And I don’t mean that in a bad way… I think [Melania should wear clothes that] relate to everybody.”

Trump has now responded in the painfully defensive manner he is known for. “[She] never asked Tom Ford, doesn’t like Tom Ford, doesn’t like his designs,” Trump told Fox And Friends. “I’m not a fan of Tom Ford, never have been.”

The great “Will You Dress Melania Trump” has been a topic broached by journalists to fashion designers since election night. Perhaps thought Cynthia Rowley offered the best piece of perspective. “In the midst of this heated debate, the question actually seems somewhat irrelevant,” Rowley told WWD. She can simply purchase whatever she wants, so how can we control it? Just because she’s shown wearing a designer does not mean that designer is endorsing her, her husband or any of their beliefs. Checking someone’s ethical beliefs before they’re allowed to purchase, sets up an exclusionary dynamic that feeds into the exact mentality that is preventing us from moving forward in a positive direction.
