Misty-eyed and losing her voice, Meryl Streep used her acceptance speech for her lifetime achievement award as a (golden) window of opportunity. Reminding the room, the Hollywood Foreign Press and subsequently the world that they all were in fact outsiders and foreigners who settled in Hollywood, Streep, through a croaky voice, didn’t falter in her message. “Viola [Davis] was born in a sharecropper’s cabin in South Carolina. Sarah Paulson was raised by a single mom in Brooklyn. Sarah Jessica Parker was one of seven or eight kids from Ohio. Amy Adams was born in Italy. Natalie Portman was born in Jerusalem,” she began to applause. “If you kick em’ all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”
As the camera panned around the room, many like her were bleary-eyed and fixated on Streep who commanded the attention of republicans, democratics and those in between. “Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. And when the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose,” she said referencing Trump’s unbelievable impersonation of a disabled reporter.
