Selena Gomez and The Weeknd have been spotted on a romantic trip to Italy just weeks after the news of their romance broke. If this feels oddly familiar, that’s because Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston did the exact same thing last year.
This weekend, photos have been hitting social media showing Selena and the Starboy singer in Florence, where they’ve been doing what couples on holiday in Italy tend to do: holding hands walking the streets, attending art galleries and museums, and booking out an entire restaurant to have lunch in private (okay, so your average couple can’t afford to do that).

Since celebrities can travel undercover if they choose to, Selena and her new man, real name Abel Tesfaye, clearly want the world to know they’re A Thing. But not just Any Thing. The kind of Thing where you go on a holiday to Florence together. The Real Thing.

Taylor and Tom had fans and paparazzi in a frenzy with their multi-continent tour of love last year, which included a stop in Rome where they didn’t care who saw them. Selena and The Weeknd following in the footsteps of Hiddleswift (RIP) is surely a coincidence, because who would copy their best friend’s failed relationship in any way, shape or form?
Intentional or not, let’s hope Selena and The Weeknd learned from Taylor and Tom, who whipped up so much intense interest with their multi-country vacation that it put an unsustainable amount of pressure on a very new couple – not to mention making their break up way more dramatic than it needed to be after just a few months of dating.
So Selena, Abel, if you’re reading this: maybe call it at Italy, or at the very least Europe, and definitely don’t fly to Australia next. We tend to get a little overexcited when A-listers come to town. As much as we’d love to have you and everything.
