The 1980s has a lot of dodgy fashion moments to answer for, but this one adopted by serial ‘80s-style advocate Bella Hadid is one we’re glad to see revived.

Having appeared on designer runways for several seasons now, the socks-with-sandals look is one of the simplest ways to soften up a polished or tailored look right now.

Far from the dodgy sports socks plus slides look we’ve seen far too many times now on the likes of Justin Beiber, the model-proven way to work pop-socks now is cute, coloured and teamed with open-toe heels, ideally strappy stiletto sandals or kitten slides.

Hadid, for example, stepped out recently in Milan wearing a high-glam white blazer dress and lace bra that was softened by sweet, frill-top ankle socks under her vintage Dior mules. The overall effect: Lolita, with practical, toe-warming benefits.

Most of the designer houses with a street edge have come to the bobby sock party. Gucci currently offers a buffet of aesthetic options ranging from disco lurex to granny chic. Prada’s look more industrial, in line with their current collection’s motor racing theme, and Fendi relies on colour and its signature logo. Vetements even offers socks to mirror its now famous yellow and red DHL tee.

The best thing about this hot trend though is its democracy in a dollar sense. You’ll find plenty of equally cute-slash-cool options at a far lower price point too.
