“I just loving finding new places to wear diamonds,” said Marilyn Monroe in Gentleman Prefer Blondes, cementing it as one of her all-time best movie lines.

Of course, her ditzy, gold-digging showgirl character Lorelei Lee was talking about hair tiaras, having been shown her first by a potential sugar daddy suiter, but are surely as diamonds were a girl’s best friend back then, gold and silver everyday pieces are what fashion ladies want for 2019.

Still, Monroe (as platinum blonde Lee) was onto something. There’s nothing better than discovering, or rediscovering, a new place to wear designer bling. Case in point this season’s biggest holiday jewellery trend: the luxury anklet.

Clare Waight Keller (of Meghan Markle wedding dress fame) was several steps ahead of the trend (pun intended) before the rest of us knew, sending models down the runway for her final collection at Chloe (Spring 2017) wearing an array of cute rainbow-coloured, knotted sandals and gold chains loosely layered above on the ankle. (We’re yet to see her touch the trend in her tailored universe at Givenchy, but never say never.)

Ditto VS Angels Behati Prinsloo and Lily Aldridge, who were amongst the first fashion-centric celebrities to adopt anklets, in their case concurrently while window shopping in Los Angeles. So far, so summer boho.

But this time around, the ankle chain trend is more fashion week glam than surfer girl grunge. Forget hippy bells, shells and all the kitschy boho whistles (although an elegant gold-wrapped shell motif is so hot right now now), the anklets style mavens are wearing now are delicate, chic and sophisticated.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking this is simply a daytime beach or festival look. Anklets are the ideal way to add a touch of fun to an evening look: dinner, cocktails, even red carpet with sandals and a thigh-high skirt split. This is designer bling with laid-back luxe attitude.

Layered over high tops or lightly tied above strappy heels, ankle chains are the biggest holiday jewellery trend of 2019.

Materials are everything: precious metals, pearls, diamonds, and even turquoise are prerequisite. Team them with Isabel Marant new-look Jalmee slides, The Row’s now ubiquitous mid-heel sling-backs, even over basic high tops like Virgil Abloh’s Off-White x Converse Chuck 70s.
