This is getting all too much. The headline should read Harvey Weinstein, not Meryl Streep. To re-cap quickly, last week Rose McGowan attacked Streep for remaining silent when – as the former Charmed star claims – she knew about Weinstein’s intimidation and sexual assault of young women.

“Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @GoldenGlobes in a silent protest,” McGowan wrote. “YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly and affect no real change. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa.”

Streep retorted via a statement in the Huffington Post this week. “It hurt to be attacked by Rose McGowan in banner headlines this weekend, but I want to let her know I did not know about Weinstein’s crimes, not in the 90s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others,” Streep began. “I wasn’t deliberately silent. I didn’t know. I don’t tacitly approve of rape. I didn’t know. I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening.” (Read the rest of the highlights here.)

McGowan has since apologised on Twitter saying the Marchesa comment was “beneath her” but there wasn’t a road map for what she was going through.

But now, it seems instead of attacking the monster at the centre of this scandal, some low-life has painted posters all over Los Angeles which feature a picture of Weinstein and Streep with the words “She Knew” written across the actress’ eyes. According to People, it’s unclear who the culprit is.

The 31-time Golden Globe nominee was in fact one of the first actresses to speak out in the wake of the Weinstein scandal. “The intrepid women who raised their voices to expose this abuse are our heroes,” she said. “One thing can be clarified. Not everybody knew. Harvey supported the work fiercely, was exasperating but respectful with me in our working relationship, and with many others with whom he worked professionally. I didn’t know about these other offenses: I did not know about his financial settlements with actresses and colleagues; I did not know about his having meetings in his hotel room, his bathroom, or other inappropriate, coercive acts. And If everybody knew, I don’t believe that all the investigative reporters in the entertainment and the hard news media would have neglected for decades to write about it.”

Streep is nominated for a Golden Globe for her upcoming performance in the film The Post, in Australian cinemas, January 11.
