Donatella Versace gave herself a hard act to follow. Closing last Spring’s runway show with five of the most famous OG supermodels on the planet was always going to be tricky to top.

This season around, she supplied a series of spaced-out highlight moments for her Spring/Summer presentation that added together to supply a collective ‘super’ experience.

This included her casting a broad array of celebrity models, from relative newbies like Kaia Gerber, Kendall Jenner, Binx Walton and the Hadid sisters, to experienced industry stalwarts like Freja Beha Erichsen, Liya Kebede, Irina Shayk, Stella Tennant, Anja Rubik and long-time favourite of Gianna Versace himself, Shalom Harlow, who made a surprise appearance to close the event.

Then, there were the head-to-toe looks themselves. In keeping with the Versace MO, everything was EXTRA, from gaudy clashing prints literally stitched together, to layered-on colour, over-sized earrings, floral hair clips, outrageous shoes and florals so sexy you could wear them out clubbing.

Hooker shoes even made a runway comeback, worn to extra effect by Emily Ratajkowski, another surprise addition to the runway collective given she’s usual a fixture in the celebrity front row these days. It was as pretty and sweet, right down to the floral headscarves, as sexy Versace could possibly be.

6 standout fashion messages to take from the Versace SS19 show

1. Donatella has upped the ante on seriously huge trends of Autumn/Winter 2018 shows.

Coloured animal prints, logomania, print on prints and OTT granny-chic were some of the most standout trends across all of last season’s shows. Donatella clearly wasn’t finished with any of these, as all reappeared, but on steroids. Green and pink lizard printed leather was the fabric of choice for several bags and coats. The ’80s-style VERSACE tee seen on Kaia Gerber (and Donatella herself during the her finale bow) is certain to sell out before anything else in the range.

2. Floral stockings with matching mules and skirt are set to become a thing.

Prints on prints are nothing new – Gucci kicked this trend back into gear as far back as 2016 – but floral granny tights layered under matching print clothes and perspex heels are a fresh spin. Forget chic twin-sets; matchy-matchy has never been so maximal.

3. We likely just spied the cult clunky shoe of next summer.

Know those chunky ‘dad’ sneakers fashion lovers have been clamoring for over the past year? Witness the chunky jandal, a more aerated, velcro-clad evolution and ugly-prettier than ever.

4. Ankle and waist jewellery are back, with serious attitude.

Forget the delicate ankle chains, jingling bells or hippie beaded iterations of the ’70s. Donatella wants us to extend the thick gold gangsta necklace trend of AW18 to our feet. Better still if layered over strappy stiletto sandals. Then, the waist-chain look of the ’80s that was just about due for a comeback. Gone, the trashy connotation. Layered under a tailored suit and with a crop top, it made use of the available bare skin canvas.

5. We want a leather mini dress as our party season go-to this summer.

Preferably one-shouldered and sky blue, or sorbet lemon ala Bella Hadid, thanks very much.

6. Satin was the elegant touch that glued all the sexy madness together.

Hooker heels aside, Emily Ratajkowski looked elegantly chic in a black satin dress. Ditto Kendall Jenner. Even naughties It-model Freja Beha Erichsen looked tailored in her orange satin jacket as she opened the show, despite the fact she was wearing just underpants over her stockings. The take-home message. Tailored satin jackets are for summer what velvet blazers were to last winter. Invest in one now.
