Fashion pundits have been threatening us with it for several years now, but it’s actually official: skinny jeans are way, way out. But jeans in the broader seense have never been more of a high-fashion staple.
So stash those savage spray-ons away and stock up on one of these on-target trends for spring and summer instead. As an added plus, most are far more figure flattering for most ladies than the super-tight variety too.
1. Patchwork
Unless you’ve been under a style-devoid rock the past year, you’ll have spotted multi-toned denim on celebs and style bloggers since Demna Vsalia sent them down his Vetements SS16 runway. Tip: make sure the patches are strikingly different denim washes. You can’t go past the brand that got it all started for elevated style, but Roxy’s far more budget-conscious spin on the trend is a great relaxed option for summer.

2. Ankle grazers
The best way to show off your favourite block-heeled sandals or lace-up ballet pumps is to opt for jeans that sit an inch about your ankle bone. Longer than culottes or traditional crops, but still short enough flatter, ankle-grazing denim makes you look taller and thinner, especially when straight-legged. A distressed cuff makes them look even better. We love both of these everyday look options from Current/Elliott and Frame Denim.
Current/Elliott, The Unrolled Fling Jeans, $176. SHOP NOW
Frame Denim Le Crop Mini Boot Cut Jeans, $399.95. SHOP NOW
3. Frayed
Best teamed with either of the aforementioned style, distressed hems have been spotted on Adidas Superstar-clad street style stars all year, but this spring the best way to wear them is with girlie accessories such as lace-up heels or pointy embroidered loafers. We love this one by Aussie brand The Fifth Label’s brand new affordable denim collection, and Blank’s new embroidered style collides several key denim trends in the one look to perfection.

4. Flared
Ground-breaking? No, but absolutely on trend right now? Absolutely. Say goodbye to the boho hippie vibe of seasons past though. Right now wide-legged jeans are best worn tailored and with heels or platforms. We love Nobody denim’s current dark indigo flares for a polished look and Mother’s extreme cropped version with a cheeky twist.

Mother, The Roller Crop Fray Jeans, $238. SHOP NOW
5. White
Some may argue that white denim never left the spring wardrobe essential status A-list, but ultra-bleached denim have never been hotter. Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid both made the look an off-duty signature throughout the US summer. Impractical, yes but super luxe and so easy to accessorise with. Tip: This is the one denim trend where good quality and fit make all the difference. We love these affordable jeans from The Fifth Denim and Edun’s luxe cropped offering is remarkably flattering for most body shapes.

6.EMBELLISHED
Once the domain of tweens and queens, it’s no secret embroidered denim is still enjoying a new type of ironic cool, but this season we’re taking things one step further with sequins and badges of either the sew-on or pin-on kind. The humble blue denim’s had a fancy threaded make-over, as spied on the runways of Gucci and . Pass the thimble.
Levi’s, California Dreamin 501 CT Jeans, $199.95. SHOP NOW
Next, Black Sequinned Front Jeans, $112. SHOP NOW
7. Slim black
Don’t be fooled: there’s a difference between a skinny indigo jean and a stylishly tailored slim leg in elegant black. Nothing says luxury like a pair of flatteringly fitted dark denim jeans, the blacker the better (you can even buy special washing powder that stops black denim fading now). Tip: avoid hipster cuts and opt for high-waisted cuts instead. We love Bassike’s no-fuss denim range with its simply perfect range of cuts and Camilla and Marc’s sports luxe drop crotch style.
