Fashion pundits have been threatening us with it for several years now, but it’s actually official: skinny jeans are way, way out. But jeans in the broader seense have never been more of a high-fashion staple.
So stash those savage spray-ons away and stock up on one of these on-target trends for spring and summer instead. As an added plus, most are far more figure flattering for most ladies than the super-tight variety too.

1. Patchwork
Unless you’ve been under a style-devoid rock the past year, you’ll have spotted multi-toned denim on celebs and style bloggers since Demna Vsalia sent them down his Vetements SS16 runway. Tip: make sure the patches are strikingly different denim washes. You can’t go past the brand that got it all started for elevated style, but Roxy’s far more budget-conscious spin on the trend is a great relaxed option for summer.

2. Ankle grazers
The best way to show off your favourite block-heeled sandals or lace-up ballet pumps is to opt for jeans that sit an inch about your ankle bone. Longer than culottes or traditional crops, but still short enough flatter, ankle-grazing denim makes you look taller and thinner, especially when straight-legged. Best teamed with either of the aforementioned style, distressed hems have been spotted on Adidas Superstar-clad street style stars all year, but this spring the best way to wear them is with girlie accessories such as lace-up heels or pointy embroidered loafers. 4. Flared
Ground-breaking? No, but absolutely on trend right now? Absolutely. Say goodbye to the boho hippie vibe of seasons past though. Right now wide-legged jeans are best worn tailored and with heels or platforms. Some may argue that white denim never left the spring wardrobe essential status A-list, but ultra-bleached denim have never been hotter. Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid both made the look an off-duty signature throughout the US summer. Impractical, yes but super luxe and so easy to accessorise with. Tip: This is the one denim trend where good quality and fit make all the difference. Once the domain of tweens and queens, it’s no secret embroidered denim is still enjoying a new type of ironic cool, but this season we’re taking things one step further with sequins and badges of either the sew-on or pin-on kind. Don’t be fooled: there’s a difference between a skinny indigo jean and a stylishly tailored slim leg in elegant black.
