The Milanese have a very particular way about them, a certain something you can’t quite describe until you come face to face with them in their natural habitat. At first, it can almost be jarring: the no-nonsense attitude coupled with the fastidiousness with which they dress; the way they move at a harried pace, and yet never seem to be in any particular hurry to get anything done anytime soon. Milan is city and a state of mind quite unlike any other.

I digress. In between discussing his latest film, A Bigger Splash (in cinemas now), filmmaker and Milan local Luca Guadagnino was kind enough to describe for GRAZIA Australia what exact constitutes the quintessential Milanese experience – one that could be yours if you happened to be the lucky winner of our ‘Luxury shopping trip for two to Milan’ competition. (Haven’t entered? We’d suggest you do here! It’s super easy – and comes with €3000 spending money, along with the chance to experience this dynamic, complex city for yourself.)

“The quintessential Milanese experience is to walk – everyone walks in Milan. You should go and see la Triennale di Milano and go to the Galleria d’Arte Moderna (museum of modern art). It’s a great museum. Try and see what is showing at the Teatro alla Scala, which is the opera house. I [often] don’t know what they’re going to play but whatever they do is fantastic.”
