Rami Malek and Lucy Boynton in Bohemian Rhapsody, nominated for several awards including Best Picture.

With a little over a week to go until the Oscars, chaos and disorganisation reigns.

As the Academy prepares for its first ceremony without a host, after Kevin Hart stepped down and a suitable replacement was not found, now a controversial decision to give some awards during commercial breaks has been hastily reversed.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, there was such vocal resistance from the industry to the decision to cut the awards for cinematography, film editing, live-action shorts and makeup and hairstyling categories from the broadcast and hand them out in the ads instead, in order to shorten the notoriously long broadcast, the Academy abandoned the plan.

“[The Academy] has heard the feedback from its membership regarding the Oscar presentation of four awards — Cinematography, Film Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling … all Academy Awards will be presented without edits, in our traditional format,” a statement said.

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in A Star Is Born, nominated for several awards including Best Picture.

Applauding the reversal, an open letter from Hollywood union organisation the IATSE said, in part:

We believe the continued recognition of the talents and artistic contributions of the cinematographer, editor, and the makeup artists and hairstylists are true to the Academy’s long history of honouring the best in filmmaking—whether that means the faces known to the public or the unknown faces of the men and women who work behind the camera but whose contribution to the film is equally valuable.

Everyone who works in our industry knows that the making of a film is a collaboration of many people, all of whom bring their artistic skills, craft, and love of motion pictures to the end result. We are glad that the Oscar audience will see that reality next Sunday.

Agreed.
