A deliciously wearable range with the ideal dash of wild undercurrent (and underskirts)
Sometimes in the Fashion Week ecoverse we’re served a show that has minimal bells and whistles staging or styling-wise, but simply serves up really, really good clothes that girls really, really want to wear.
The Melbourne-based brand founded by former C/MEO and Finders Keepers designers respectively, Kathryn Forth and Julia Ritorto, has built momentum over the past two years along with a slew of fashion blogger and celebrity fans. (The most impressive example of the latter is Beyonce, who wore an Acler bustier on a much-snapped date night out with husband Jay Z.)
Certainly, there were what we call in the business ‘fashion moments’ – a billowing bright fuscia dress, a spotted coat akin to a quilted doona, coats wrapped almost like obi belts over layered dresses and skirts in a way no typical woman would attempt – but the rest of the show featured universally classic and appealing pieces.
Any woman in the audience might have imagined herself walking out of the show in the black scalloped hem Mini skirt, balloon sleeved mini dress, or divine white Grecian smock. While the collection felt targeted to well-to-do millenials, there was select pieces there for the over-30s as well.
The fine line between creative and commercially appealing is one many a designer wobbles on as they journey the formative years of a brand. The duo behind Acler were this morning as sure footed as any of the best on show at MBFWA18 this week.
