French Morocco 1942: Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard’s swanky spy thriller opens with an arid landscape as intelligence officer and resistance fighter Max Vatan (Pitt) parachutes in for a new mission. That assignment would include meeting French resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Cotillard) and assassinating a German official. And while the pair didn’t plan to fall in love, the plotline is completely hijacked by the chemistry between the characters. Perhaps though the romance is heightened too by the exquisite costumes, Joanna Johnston leading the way with a high-class contemporary 1940s style. “I did the costumes in that kind of old-fashioned Hollywood style; super elegant and just all heightened,” she says. Set against colourfully rich backdrops in Spain and the UK, the film is a must-see this season.

Allied releases in Australian cinemas on Boxing Day, December 26.
