Amal Clooney

Question for the first Monday in May: Does Amal Clooney moonlight as a human rights lawyer or one of the world’s best dressed women? Between court cases defending Yazidi women to walking a custom crimson Maison Margiela Artisanal number about town, she holds both roles equally well. And really, she can be both.

In 2018, upon co-chairing the Met Gala’s Heavenly Bodies exhibition, Clooney stepped out in Richard Quinn’s ethereal interpretation of the theme; a majestic strapless silver foil bustier atop a pair of a black cigarette pants and a dramatic, floral-printed train. Just prior to the exhibition Quinn was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design.

But not long into the event, Clooney decided to change out of her Richard Quinn and into a red Tom Ford dress, much to the dismay of the latter designer. According to reports, Clooney was originally meant to wear an ornate red gown designed to look like a stain glass window. Having spent many weeks and thousands of dollars on the gown, Ford and his team were disappointed Clooney instead opted for Quinn’s gown at the last minute. But they understood.

“They were annoyed, obviously, but they were gracious and said it was fine to go with [another designer], but they would prefer that Amal not wear the dress at all if she wasn’t going to wear it on the Met Ball red carpet,” an insider told Page Six.

Anna Wintour told a late night show later on that the reason Clooney changed into the Ford gown was out of the fear the foil on her first dress would tear.

Clooney’s most recent case involved addressing the UN, urging them to ISIS members accused of sexual crimes accountable. The 41-year-old was speaking in New York on behalf of the Yazidi survivors, a minority’s group of women in the Middle East who was enslaved, assaulted and some even killed by Islamic extremists.

“I agree that we are facing an epidemic of sexual violence. And I believe that justice is the antidote,” she said. “You owe it to the thousands of women and girls who must watch ISIS members shave their beards and go back to their normal lives while they the victims never can.”

“Ladies and Gentlemen. This is your Nuremberg moment,” Clooney continued. “Your chance to stand on the right side of history.”

The resolution passed. (But it should be noted, this only went through after the Trump administration questioned language which implies support for abortions.)
