Amber Heard made a hurried exit from the Unite4:Humanity gala in Los Angeles on Friday night local time, forcing her friends Cara Delevingne and iO Tillett Wright to accept an award on her behalf.

Heard walked the red carpet at the start of the night, but was later seen huddling with Cara and iO and some other people and “appeared to be distressed and uncomfortable” a source told E! News, adding “she later exited through a side door”.

The 30-year-old had been due to accept an award for her work with the American Civil Liberties Union – which included donating the $7 million she received in her divorce settlement from Johnny Depp to the organisation.

“Our dear friend Amber unfortunately suffered a bit of an emergency earlier this evening and she had to go,” iO told the crowd as she took the stage in place of Amber. iO added that Amber would be disappointed not to meet the person who presented her award, Somalia-born activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

“And I want to also say that I’ve never seen Amber nervous and I’ve known her quite intimately for a long time,” iO continued. “She’s met pretty much everyone that you could be star-struck by. But Ayaan Hirsi Ali is as close to God as you could get for her, so to know that Ayaan was here and for her to have to leave anyway means that it was a very serious emergency.

“We both are hoping that she’s okay.”

The Rum Diary star has been plagued by controversy and legal woes in recent years. In January Amber finalised her very public and drawn-out divorce from Depp, and she’s currently embroiled in a legal battle with the producer of her recent film London Fields, in which a lawyer for Heard claims the producer made a sex scene purporting to be of Amber using a body-double, since Amber refused to do one.
