Amy Schumer has found herself in new territory with her new Netflix special, Growing.
The comedian, once known for regaling audiences with sex and dating stories, grew up in the last year in a big way: she married chef Chris Fischer in February 2018, and in October the couple announced they’re expecting their first child in the coming months.
Now, in Growing, Schumer’s comedy has evolved. The 37-year-old mines her suddenly adult life for anecdotes – including sharing with the public that Fischer has Autism.
“I knew from the beginning that my husband’s brain was a little different than mine,” Schumer tells the audience in the Netflix special, which was filmed in Chicago.
“I have to start this over because I really want to get this right because I love him very much.”
“My husband was diagnosed with what used to be called Asperger’s,” she explains.
“He has autism spectrum disorder. He’s on the spectrum,” Schumer continues. “And there were some signs early on.
“Once he was diagnosed, it dawned on me how funny it was, because all of the characteristics that make it clear that he’s on the spectrum are all of the reasons that I fell madly in love with him. That’s the truth. He says whatever is on his mind. He keeps it so real. He doesn’t care about social norms or what you expect him to say or do.”
The director, actress and writer gave the example of a time when they were together and she fell over. He didn’t rush to help her up or ask if she was okay, as many people might.
“[He] kind of froze and became a lighthouse, opening and closing his mouth.”
Also, he can’t lie. If Amy asks Chris if he likes her outfit, and he doesn’t, he’ll be brutally honest, saying something like “You have a lot of other clothes, why don’t you wear those?”
In the special, Schumer delves into pregnancy, settling down and more. It hits Netflix in Australia on March 20.
