Dean Martin was right. When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore. And just like that glorious moonshine, another thing that sparks amore is Aperol Spritz and pizza. A match made in foodie heaven, no such combo brings such joy, a pairing par excellence. Perhaps the only thing better than Aperol Spritz and pizza, is free pizza, and thanks to Italian dining stallions Matteo Downtown, this is all but a reality.
To celebrate the iconic orange aperitif’s 100 year anniversary, Matteo Downtown is bringing Italy’s celebrated Aperitivo culture to the Sydney CBD with an inspired take on the Venetian custom of drinking and snacking. To honour the two great A’s of Italy – Aperol and Aperitivo – you can enjoy a complimentary Margarita Pizza when you purchase two Aperol Spritzes. From 4pm – 6pm everyday in July, you and friend could be feasting on moorish wood-fired pizza and a sparkling Aperol Spritz in the light-filled, Milanese-inspired space. The closest thing you’ll get to being in Italy; think of it as stylish happy hour – Italian style.
And to accompany your Spritz and Margarita Pizza, might we suggest a plate of burrata and Parma prosciutto, or Chef Orazio’s signature dish; a house-made Carbonara the stuff of spaghetti dreams. Fresh short cut pasta, a glorious halo of parmigiano Reggiano, crispy pancetta, cracked black pepper and a glistening egg yolk, which when stirred, reveals the creamiest, dreamiest Carbonara – aka the perfect dish to follow an iconic Italian aperitivo.
It’s true, Italians do it better at Matteo Downtown with Aperol.
