We all want lustrous, healthy hair, but many of us do things on a daily basis that damage the very entity that promotes hair growth.

We’re all guilty of reaching for the dry shampoo every morning – hey, who doesn’t love a quick and easy solution to oily or limp hair? And then there are all the other styling and setting products kept on our bathroom shelves. We tie our hair back into tight ponytails and buns, sweat at the gym and run around outside, exposed to the elements and pollution.

All these things and more take their toll, and with most of us only washing our hair two or three times a week, it’s now more important than ever that we care for our scalp properly.

We spend hundreds of dollars trying to get our hair looking its best, but then forget the number one rule: to have healthy hair, we need a healthy scalp.

Are you neglecting your scalp?
“Your scalp is simply an extension of your facial skin,” says Justina Mejia-Montane, the vice president of global product development for hair and beauty experts, Aveda. “And just like your face, your scalp needs cleansing, balancing and protection.”

A healthy, clean scalp will stimulate cell turnover and create a healthy environment for your hair to grow. Many of us reach for a shampoo bottle looking for the solution – but shampoo is for your hair.

Similarly to how we care for the skin on our face, what we should be doing is exfoliating, cleansing and balancing the skin on our scalp.

Change your hair care routine
The trio of Pramasana products from Aveda have been created to use on shampoo days. Begin with the exfoliation step using the Exfoliating Scalp Brush. You should use the brush on dry hair (before you get in the shower) applied directly onto your scalp in gentle circular motions. The gentle massage with the flexible, looped bristle brush stimulates scalp cells, loosens build-up and increases microcirculation. This sort of massage is also a great way to boost blood supply and oxygen to the scalp, both essential elements for hair growth.

The Pramasana range also includes a Purifying Scalp Cleanser and Protective Scalp Concentrate, both highly efficacious, with a botanical base that is 96 percent naturally derived and inspired by Ayurveda, staying true to the brand’s roots.

After exfoliation, you apply the Purifying Scalp Cleanseron damp hair in the shower and massage it in with your fingers (just like you would cleanse your face). Next, you shampoo your hair, and then rinse out both products. Once you’ve conditioned your hair and jumped out of the shower, you then apply the Protective Scalp Concentrate to your clean scalp, leaving it in (this is the most potent product of all and will ensure your scalp remains balanced and protected).

The best part is less shower time, since you’ll no longer need to shampoo your hair twice to cut through product and pollution build-up – the Purifying Scalp Cleanser does this for you, cleansing and exfoliating and balancing sebum levels.

The products are infused with a signature Aveda blend that features a nutrient- and vitamin-rich seaweed extract (to control and balance your scalp’s sebum levels); a lactobacillus ferment (to support the scalp’s protective barrier) and tamanu oil (to protect your scalp against pollution and environmental aggressors).

The Pramasana collection also includes a luxury in-salon only Nourishing Scalp Masque. Rich, creamy and conditioning, the 98 percent naturally derived professional treatment acts to purify and nourish when massaged in to your head.

Or you can indulge yourself at home with The Awakening Scalp Ritual. The scalp massage is simply delightful – a great way to relax after a busy day before jumping in the shower. After the brushing and massaging ritual is complete, apply the Purifying Scalp Cleanser and distribute it evenly over your scalp. Massage with fingers for a couple of minutes too gently exfoliate and deeply purify your scalp.

Wash out the Purifying Scalp Cleanser with your Aveda shampoo of choice, massaging your scalp as you do. Then, apply Aveda conditioner and comb it through using your fingers. Leave the conditioner in for a couple of minutes, and wrap your head in a hot towel while you wait.

Rinse out the conditioner and apply the Protective Scalp Concentrate to a damp scalp – split your hair into sections when applying this lightweight serum. Massage the concentrate into your scalp and leave it in, allowing it to penetrate the surface layers of the skin and help preserve the scalp’s natural protective barrier while buffering from pollution. Apply your Aveda leave-in hair treatment of choice, and style.
