Aziz Ansari has released a statement following the publication of allegations that he sexually harassed a 23-year-old woman after their date.

The woman, a photographer from Brooklyn whose identity she has kept private, shared her account on the website Babe last week, claiming the Master Of None star behaved inappropriately and pressured her into sexual activity even though she says she made it clear she was uncomfortable.

“In September of last year, I met a woman at a party,” Ansari said in the statement obtained by CNN.

“We exchanged numbers. We texted back and forth and eventually went on a date. We went out to dinner, and afterwards we ended up engaging in sexual activity, which by all indications was completely consensual,” he said.

“The next day, I got a text from her saying that although ‘it may have seemed okay,’ upon further reflection, she felt uncomfortable. It was true that everything did seem okay to me, so when I heard that it was not the case for her, I was surprised and concerned,” the statement continued.

“I took her words to heart and responded privately after taking the time to process what she had said.”

In her account, the woman says after a dinner date she and Ansari went back to his Manhattan apartment, where they began kissing. When he started trying to take things further, including putting his fingers down her throat and trying to perform oral sex on her, she says she gave “verbal and non-verbal signs” she was not interested.

“Most of my discomfort was expressed in me pulling away and mumbling,” she said, adding she had otherwise liked him until that point and didn’t want to make a scene.

After what she describes as consistent pressuring from the Golden Globe winner, including him going to retrieve a condom and unbuttoning her pants, she says she performed oral sex on him.

“I think I just felt really pressured. It was literally the most unexpected thing I thought would happen at that moment because I told him I was uncomfortable,” she said.
