Backlighting, Braids And A Toilet Fire. Coachella 2019 Is Already Out-Coachellaing itself
The party among the Palms has summoned the beautiful people, once again
Last night, in one of the tent city shower blocks of this year’s Coachella pilgrimage, a rogue fire broke out. According to Instagram and Twitter footage, revellers were woken by explosions to see a blaze ripping through the loos not far from their accommodation. Apparently, while a few people were seen running from the block in towels it was quickly extinguished by the Riverside County fire department and no one was injured. It’s still unclear if any flower crowns were destroyed.
The festival kicked off on Friday night, with acts such as Childish Gambino, Janelle Monae and even a surprise appearance by Selena Gomez taking centre stage. But let’s not kid ourselves, the music is only a small reason Coachella is Coachella. The rest is the sceeeene. The specifically planned fashion and the selfies flanked by Ferris Wheels and Ombre sunsets.
Coachella is the Mecca for festival fashion. Where neo-hippies decked in lace frocks prance beside mates un-coincidentally complementing in snake-skin bell bottoms and vintage (but new) band tees. When pictures roll in post-sunset each Coachella evening, the atmosphere of fashiony, festivaly frivolity is both intoxicating and strangely convincing. Should I ditch my daily uniform of straight-line trousers and white tees for a world of printed shirts, fluffy coats and high-waisted swim briefs? Am I limiting my best life by rarely rolling up wearing ironic shorts, cowboy boots and fishnets? All I know is I’m having my annual craving to take a selfie in front of a gelato-coloured Palm Springs bungalow with a couple of palm trees off in the distance.
So, we’re glad the toilet fire didn’t turn this year’s parade into a literal Fyre Festival. Where else would we delight in the fun, freedom and fashion of such a Lycra-Woodstock? It sets trends for the year ahead and the tone for the northern hemi’s Spring Break party-a-thon. I’m brushing off my sheer maxi skirt and western waist-coat as we speak, just to wear around the house.
Here’s our round up of peak Coachellification so far (including get-ups from two GRAZIA cover girls!), and there’s still several days’ worth of revelling to come. Peace and halter necks to you all.
