Amongst a steady stream of “nude”, “natural” and “raw” makeup looks rolled out across Paris Fashion Week, two major fashion houses turned their back on this desideratum – opting for a untamed look that saw a heavy-handed eye come into play. While both normally found at play with the “no makeup, makeup” regimen, this year saw Balmain and Chloe toughen up.

For the Fall 2017/18 Balmain collection, designer Olivier Routseing briefed makeup artist Tom Pecheux that he wanted his “Balmain Army” as a warrior woman – complete with smoky eyes, tight braids, and metallic lip jewellery. To get this visual, Pecheux gave each girl a smudged kohl-lined eye with the eyeliner applied to the full rim.

Using an assortment of pencils, gel liner, metallic pigment, and black eyeshadow, key to the look was the MAC Fluidline Gel in Blacktrack that Pecheux placed all over the lids and under the eyes. Surprisingly, no mascara was used in the making of this look.

Also adopting a harder look was Chloé makeup director Aaron de Mey. Straying far from the fresh girl-next-door makeup traditionally synonymous with the brand – this season’s Chloé girl was seen taking a walk on the wild side.

Touting his inspiration as Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, and Kate Moss, Mey says the look is not grunge rather rock’n’roll. To get the look, Mey lined the rims of each model’s eyes with black pencil  – smudging it around the edges to elongate the eye. A sharp cat eye was applied to corners.

The 2017 girl gets tough and we approve.
