Fewer shows have made as much impact on the beauty zeitgeist these past few years as Scream Queens. While Ryan Murphy’s latest TV hit has been serving up some surprising and unpredictable storylines, the beauty looks worn by the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority girls have been consistently covetable and just plain pretty. All hyper real skin, powdery finishes, pink lips and lashes to the max – the beauty looks are as iconic and distinctive as the actresses who wear them; Lea Michele, Emma Roberts, and Keke Palmer. With the release of season one on DVD and the filming of season two already underway, we were desperate to speak to the show’s Makeup Department Heads,  Eryn Krueger Mekash & Kelley Mitchell for the story behind the beauty and to get their top tips for looking chic like a Chanel.

Erin: Ryan Murphy is the person responsible for all the inspiration for the makeup and hair looks. He wanted a very soft, perfect look for the Chanels. He wanted some of the actors to have individual looks like Zayday and Grace. We wanted everyone to be very polished, but clean, non-heavy makeup. Some of our quirkier sorority pledges wore less makeup according to their character description. We also go off what our Costumer Designer, Lou Eyrich, initially creates. She sets the tone for the show with the colour palette and clothing.

Erin: We wanted Lea to look very plain as Hester so that she had a big swing into the more glamorous Chanel. Kelley drew in extra eyebrows to create a bit of a unibrow. The headgear helped a lot!

Kelley: At the beginning of the season she was Neckbrace Hester so she needed to be completely makeup free. As Eryn mentioned, I drew in extra eyebrow hairs to make her a little less groomed. When she changed into a Chanel I wanted to stay away from her Rachel Berry winged eyeliner and nude lips. MAC Hot Gossip lipstick for the signature Chanel lip, Armani foundation for great skin coverage, Koh Gen Do Gommage gel for beautiful smooth skin, Amore Pacific Moisture Bound for skin hydration, and Julie Hewett Cheekies for the perfect cheek shine.

KELLEY:  All of the Chanel’s wear pink lipstick so that would be number one. After that I would say focus on skin & brows. prodpicM.A.C Cosmetics, Lipstick in Hot Gossip, $36. SHOP NOW
