Here we are, time to take a breath because it’s the half way mark of Fashion Month Spring/Summer 2017. Just as those designers who have shown thus far in New York and London have dictated what we’ll be wearing next season, the talented make-up artists and hairstylists working backstage have also helped steer the course of our cosmetics bags. And while it’s still too soon to call the major trends (Milan and Paris have major pull when it comes to judging what’s new and what’s next in beauty) there is one product that just keeps coming down the catwalk – good old lip balm.

And it wasn’t just to accompany the barely-there looks at Tommy Hilfiger, Tory Burch, Proenza Schouler and Emilia Wickstead, but also to counter balance the loud beauty statements made at Marc Jacobs, Prabul Gurung and House of Holland. Might this sudden catwalk appreciation for this trusty beauty essential be a backlash against the meticulously layered lips looks and matte formulations that have dominated social media for so many months? Or were designers simply requesting that lips take a backseat against their collections? Either way there’s no denying the unfussy youth appeal of these fresh, hydrated lip looks and the trend has come just in time for us with a fresh line-up of luxe lip balms currently hitting counters.

From MAC’s Tendertalk and Dior Lip Glow, both of which change colour according to your skin’s body chemistry, to Estee Lauder’s new high tech 2-step treatment that plumps and defines contours, while it hydrates. Chanel’s Rouge Coco Baume presents the perfect base for their collection of lipsticks, while the hybrid offering from French pharmacy brand Embryolisse sees their cult moisturiser paired with lip-gloss that can be swept onto your cheekbones for a fresh finish. We dare you to stop using Lanolips 101 Ointment after you’ve tried it (spoiler alert: you won’t be able to) Or if you’re into a classic approach you can’t go past good old Paw PawAesop’s stick or Nivea’s new coconut balm which smells like summer. Balm away!
