You can tell a lot about a city by the tone of its street style. In my travels as a fashion editor, I’ve been to more international fashion weeks than I can count and I can tell you first hand that what people wear outside the shows in New York is very different to Paris or London, Mumbai or even Berlin.

As much as I love seeing all the new and established talent shown on the runways inside, what guests wear IRL is just as fascinating. Last week I had the express pleasure of visiting New Zealand Fashion Week 2018 in Auckland for its 18th annual series of shows, and I’m delighted to say my first visit to the harbour city’s fashion festival meant an introduction to its fun local style vibe too.

Not surprisingly given the location and 16-degree temperature, knits and coats featured heavily. The tailoring was relaxed and playful, and added details tended to come in the form of colour splashes, quirky bags or fabulously out-there tattoos. Also not surprising was the heavy presence of designer sneakers, which outnumbered heels two to one during the day.
