It’s common knowledge curly hair can have a mind of its own. Unless you’re Beyonce, that is. In a colourful series posted to Instagram last week, Beyonce sported perfectly tamed, wet curls, making those of us with unruly, badly behaved curls green with envy. So what is her secret (aside from the best hairstylists in the world)? A good dose of product.

Slicked down at the root, the wet-finish continued through the mid-lengths and ends, with the wet curls a kind of nod to the ’80s / ’90s. Referencing the Jheri curls of the ’80s, Beyonce’s kinks were all kinds of perfect; loosely tousled and gloriously glossy, they fell with weight and flair at the base. So how do we achieve crunch-free yet defined coils? A heavy-handed application of curl cream or mist on damp, even dry, hair. The trick is to scrunch the product through the hair liberally, working the product throughout, then either air-dry or blast with a diffuser – every curly girl’s best friend.

Slick a mould or gel at the crown to flatten any flyaways, add a Cèline shirt and denim cut-offs, and you’re halfway to becoming a Carter.
