They say what goes around comes around, but no throwback jewellery trend has ever been so literal. Right now, the most versatile earring comes in outrageously big circles.

The beauty of 1980s throwback hoops is that they work with literally everything: ripped denim, red-carpet power-suit, cocktail dress. Heck, even a bikini.

While designer labels such as Jacquemus, Tom Ford, Loewe, Fendi and Isabel Marant showed enormous hoops on their Autumn / Winter 2018-19 runways, this is one trend with plenty of staying power on the high street, too.

The trick if you’re buying a lo-fi version is to go for metals that don’t scream cheap.
