Everyone who watched Big Little Lies had two thoughts after the final episode: “Holy crap, that was amazing!” and then “When is season two?”

Some of the show’s stars, including Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon have publicly expressed their desire to make another season, but there’s been doubt it would happen since it’s based on the novel by Australian author Liane Moriarty which does not have a sequel.

After the HBO hit won an incredible eight Emmy Awards this week, there’s been more talk than ever about whether a second season might happen.

Speaking at an Emmys after party, Moriarty, who’s also a producer on the show, told Deadline “I’m thinking about it”.

Later she told another Deadline journalist the Emmys success makes her “even more [encouraged] to write a follow-up and second season.”

HBO programming president Casey Bloys also seemed excited about the prospect.

“The producers are all talking, they seem very excited. I haven’t seen anything yet but I’m hopeful because they are so excited.”

Big Little Lies is set in the wealthy seaside Californian town of Monterey, and follows the intertwined lives of women who on the surface seem to have it all, but underneath are tangled in a web of murder, secrets and, you guessed it, lies.

The show stars Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Alexander Skarsgard, Zoe Kravitz and Laura Dern.

Reese teased a second season could be in the works recently, telling E! News:

“We’re talking to Liane Moriarty, who wrote the book, about how could these characters go on, what would happen. We definitely left it open-ended so there’s a possibility there.”

Kidman echoed her co-star’s sentiment, also in an interview with E! News:

“We want to do it! We love these women and it’s just trying to move pieces and it’s complicated.”

There’s no question the demand is there – here’s hoping there’s good news soon.

Big Little Lies won eight awards at the 2017 Emmys, including Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie (Nicole Kidman), Outstanding Limited Series and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie (Laura Dern).
