While garish pink is not typically the colour of a fashion week runway (thank heavens), it was underfoot for stars streaming into the 2016 Billboard Music Awards earlier today. Still, despite the very different outfit framing, it appears many of the guests present (or their stylists at least) had looked recently to the high fashion shows for inspiration. Amongst the many, many (many) sequins spotted on female invitees were an on-trend group who’d embraced hot-right-now lace instead. Here are our picks of the ladies who got it right, plus a few who need to stick to sparkles next time…

Lace lEADERS: stars who nailed it…

1. Jessica Alba She can wear a fitted lame gown like she was born it in and has a tendency for pretty pastels, but tonight J-Alb unleashed her inner fierce woman in a transparent black lace mini by Zuhair Murad and thigh-high suede boots – and owned it. Extra props for breaking out of her comfort zone with that edgy top knot and electric blue eye make-up.

2. Meredith Mickelson A skin-toned flared lace jumpsuit isn’t one for the feint-hearted, but if you are going to attempt it, being leggy model certainly helps. Despite glimpses of black lining that suggested her onesie was actually inside out, Mickelson made this work with sky-high heels and glowing skin. How cute is this Insta video of her snapping selfies with fans outside the MGM Grand venue.

3. Lucy Hale The Pretty Little Liars star, pictured below left onstage with singer American singer/songwriter Halsey (who we’re sorry to say didn’t make it remotely near the best lace list), picked a crack styling team. Her Zuhair Murad dress teamed with the most fun hair of the night (deceptively elegant from the front, cheeky braid cleverness from behind) won a universal style tick from critics.

4. Heidi Klum Why Heidi was there is of no relevance. (Music awards? Ex wife of musician? She likes music? We’re still guessing…) What we care most about is this one-shouldered Alfredo Villalba lace dress, finished with Christian Louboutin shoes. Add this one to your ‘Spring Races’ maybe list.

Plus the ‘well done for trying, but sorry, no’ list…

1. Britany Spears We get the impression Spears hasn’t cared less for a long while whether she gets a thumbs-up from the style world – she simply wants our attention. Well, she got it. Job done.

2. Demi Lovato As partial as we are to a head-to-toe Chanel look, and to DL on the whole, leather gloves on blue nails on boucle on lace leaves us unsure where to look first. Lovato proves it’s possible to have too much and not enough going on in an outfit at the same time. Her performance was amazing though…
