Alexi Lubomirski is the celebrity photographer who shot Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s famous engagement photos. One of my favourite things about him is how he always has a little story to tell about each of his subjects; a little pearl of insight into the lives of these people.
Of his favourite Royal shot he said, “There is this black and white shot where they’re cuddling and she was wrapped up in his jacket. I remember it was the last shot of the day and the light was going down. He was wearing this big overcoat and I said: ‘Wrap her up in your jacket. Turn around so you’re facing each other.’ The hairs went up on the back of my neck as I was taking the pictures.She looked up at him and they were giggling and the ring came out of the jacket, and I was snapping and I’m like, ‘Yes, yes, yes, this is amazing. This is it.’ I think they were laughing at my over-ecstatic behaviour and then again they were giggling with each other – they get in their own little world.”
In the wake of the Quentin Tarantino-directed film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood premiering at the Cannes Film Festival last week, Lubomirski shot the cast – including Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio – for Enquire magazine. But the photographer revealed it almost didn’t happen. “Well this was a cool day!” he said. “One month ago, after nearly crashing in our plane, taking off from JFK, and staying awake all night in the airport waiting for the replacement flight, we got a last-minute flight to LA, went straight to the shoot location and into one of the coolest shoots I have done in a while! Three very cool cats.”
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood received a seven-minute standing ovation in Cannes. In the history of standing ovations at the Film Festival, however, any length of applause under ten minutes is considered very short. To the normal person like Margot Robbie, it felt super awkward as shown in this three-minute video:
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood stars DiCaprio, Pitt and Robbie and is set in Hollywood in 1969 against the backdrop of the Manson Family murders. Robbie plays Sharon Tate, the actress who was murdered at her home while pregnant, with four others. DiCaprio’s character Dalton was a neighbour of Tate’s. The group, led by Charles Manson, was found guilty of the deaths of nine people in July and August of 1969.
Critics have called it “thrilling, provocative, blackly comical” and a “masterpiece”. They have also cited Robbie’s performance as heartbreaking to watch in every scene.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is in Australian cinemas on August 15.
