Just a day after announcing she will be closing the Australian arm of her business, it’s been revealed that Kym Ellery’s eponymous label is now in the hands of external administrators.
Yesterday, the Paris-based designer released a statement about the changes to her antipodean headquarters and the closing of her two Sydney stores on April 16.
“I am very proud to have built an independent, globally recognised fashion house from my home, Australia, it has not been without its challenges. Unfortunately, running the production out of Australia proved to be commercially unsustainable. As a result of some poor strategic decisions that were made, and the high cost of manufacturing in Australia, we have been left with no choice but to close Elleryland, our production facility and Australian operations company.”
However, just this morning it was revealed via ASIC that Ellery Land Pty. Ltd. is now in the hands of external administrators. What will happen from here, remains to be seen.
This is extremely sad news for the Australian and international fashion sphere. Ellery has been a favourite among high fashion minimalists and celebrities since its launch 12 years ago, and has, for the past few years, been a staple on the Paris Fashion Week calendar. In 2017 Ellery was even listed within the BoF 500, a list of the most impressive people shaping the fashion industry. Her seasonal collections of signature bell sleeves, flares and overcoats are always wildly anticipated.
More to come.
