In a world-first, a major exhibition of original art from the rapidly-expanding Marvel universe will be presented at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art next year.

Marvel: Creating The Cinematic Universe boasts the honour of being Australia’s first large-scale exhibition devoted to celebrating the titular comic book realm, and will also be the largest exhibition of its kind presented in an art museum.

Encompassing original artworks, film props, costumes and more drawn from private collections, past and present Marvel Studios film and the currently in-production Thor: Ragnarok, the exhibition will document the transition that some of popular culture’s most beloved characters have made from comic book to blockbuster cinema franchise.

While it promises to showcase over 300 signature items – including Thor’s hammer, Iron Man’s suits and Captain America’s shield – the exhibition will also champion the artists, production designers and creative teams who bring each facet of the incredibly rich Marvel to life in such a spectacular (and lucrative) fashion. A retrospective of films will also screen at GOMA’s Australian Cinémathèque.

Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe will be presented at the Gallery of Modern Art from May 27 until September 3, 2017. Tickets are on sale now. More information is available here.
