The first single off Britney Spears’ soon-to-be-released album reached number one on the iTunes chart in more than 30 countries within hours of its release on Friday.

The instant success of Make Me, a slow, sexy pop track featuring up-and-coming rapper G-Eazy, proves Britney still knows what it takes to make a good pop song almost two decades after her debut hit single Baby One More Time.

While Fergie went full-throttle with her comeback track MILF$, blasting listeners with an intense BPM and featuring social media stars Kim Kardashian and Chrissy Teigen in the video as a safety net to get the attention of a young generation who perhaps don’t recall her heyday, Britney seems comfortable with her smooth, subtle new single – and so confident in her own pulling power that she decided to feature a rapper with a relatively small profile.

It’s a different strategy for Britney to last year, when she teamed up with it girl Iggy Azalea for the track Pretty Girls, which didn’t garner a lot of acclaim from critics or the public. It seems the princess of pop has gone back to what she does well, and given the instant success of Make Me, it seems to be working for her.
