Flashback: At the 2017 Met Gala, it seemed the real party wasn’t in the museum’s hallowed hallways, but in the bathroom.

Photos posted on social media by some of the party’s VIP guests revealed that the restrooms were the place to be for the ‘it’ crowd – and also where some rule-breaking behaviour took place.

Despite New York State banning smoking in enclosed spaces, several stars puffed on cigarettes in the toilets, and blatantly flouted the rules by posing for photos. Paris Jackson posted a photo of Bella Hadid exhaling smoke with a cigarette between her fingers, meanwhile Prabal Gurung shared a shot that showed model Behati Prinsloo taking a drag in the background.

Rita Ora also shared a shot of Dakota Johnson lighting up.

The fine for smoking in a banned area is $100, although given what most of these stars earn, it was probably worth the risk for a bad-ass photo.

Less shocking than smoking in the toilets but still controversial was all the selfies being taken. In 2015 the Met Gala’s host, Vogue editor Anna Wintour tried to ban social media at the event, an unpopular move especially among the millennial guests. The social media ban was later changed to only apply to selfies. But as proved by all the shots that flooded social media during and after the event, rules were made to be broken.

Of all the candid, blurry snaps from the night, the best has to be Kylie Jenner’s ‘annual bathroom selfie’ (above), which captured an eclectic group of guests including Kim Kardashian, Lily Donaldson, Kendall Jenner, A$AP Rocky, Brie Larson, Frank Ocean, P. Diddy and Paris Jackson, among others.

The 2021 Met Gala red carpet is happening on Tuesday May 3 AEST. Check back at graziamagazine.com for rolling coverage from the event.
