Pictures of Celine Dion’s sartorial moments at Paris Couture Week were the talk of the French capital in recent days; Valentino, Giorgio Armani Privé, the list went on. It was indeed though a bubblegum pink satin mini by Dodo Bar worn to a show at the Moulin Rouge which captured the attention of prying paparazzi. Surrounded by a sea of show girls in red, white and blue ruffles, it was evident the Canadian powerhouse no longer wears couture quietly.
“I’ve always loved fashion, from as far back as I can remember,” Dion told People. “But as everyone knows, I’ve gone through some extremely difficult times in recent years, and I suppose that I’m spreading my wings a little bit more these days and doing so with the help of beautiful clothing and accessories.”
It was sad then for the online rhetoric surrounding such moments to focus in on Dion’s weight. In a recent interview with The Sun, the 50-year-old was quick to shut down the line of questioning when it addressed such criticism. “If I like it, I don’t want to talk about it,” she said. “Don’t bother. Don’t take a picture. “I’m doing this for me,” the singer said. “I want to feel strong, beautiful, feminine and sexy. If you like it, I’ll be there. If you don’t, leave me alone.”
Dion also discussed her blossoming friendship with her back-up dancer Pepe Muñoz. Pictured dancing at a Lady Gaga concert and holding hands through the most romantic city in the world, Dion told The Sun the pair were just “good friends”. “Of course we hug and hold hands and go out, so people see that,” she said. “I mean, he’s a gentleman. He’s giving me his hand to go out.”
Dion’s husband and manager René Angélil passed away from throat cancer in 2016 at the age of 73. Meeting when Dion was just a teenager, he was the first and only boy she had ever kissed so there is a lot of interest in possible new suitors.
While her heart will most definitely go on, for now, Dion is celebrating a new day. “I’m at the best of my life right now.” And right now that involves couture. Please, enjoy.
