While fashion and beauty have been making serious nods to the 90’s for a few seasons now (think chokers, brown lipstick, matte contouring et al.) Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection made some delightful throwbacks to other until-now neglected trends of the decade. For the ‘Chanel Data Centre’ themed show, models walked through giant server rooms, clad in backward baseball caps, neon make-up, bubble-gum lip-gloss and side ponytails secured with chunky bobble elastics.

Meanwhile make-up artist Tom Pecheaux layered models lips in bubble-gum tinted gloss and blended blush high onto their cheekbones, across to the temples and even onto the eyes, for a retro-futuristic feel. The effect referenced the draping technique – the 80’s and 90’s blush application made popular by make-up master, Way Bandy – and we’ve since seen the same heavy-handed rouge on the Giorgio Armani and Kenzo runways too. The message? Update your blush arsenal because it’s the pop of colour you’re going to want to wear this spring and summer.

Also getting the mid-90’s memo was hairstylist Sam McKnight. Part Fresh Prince, part Clarissa Explains It All with a slice of 90210 thrown in, McKnight opted for side ponytails affixed with what else? Chunky hair baubles embossed or charmed with the house’s famous CC logo.
