When Kristen Stewart walked the 2016 Cannes Film Festival red carpet in a crimson eye it was divisive to say the least. While for some it conjured up scarlet images of Marilyn Manson, Stewart’s makeup was a bold, standout choice, where smokey eyes, and glossed lips in an array of pinky nudes normally rain supreme. Hinting at things to come, fast forward three months, and Chanel’s Fall 2016 makeup collection – ‘Le Rouge Collection No.1’ champions the shade. Stemming from the maison’s original roots, Coco Chanel once proudly declared that for her “red is the colour of life, of blood, I love red”, and now the fashion house has bottled up that very sense of rebellion and glamour, in a collection that pays homage to the bold colour.

The New Smokey Eye
Create Stewart’s vibrant, rusty red eye by blending the Illusion D’Ombre Velvet in Rouge Brule over your lid and along the lower lashline, and follow with a few coats of the burgundy-tinted mascara. For a subtle hint of rouge, opt for Le Volume de Chanel Mascara in Mirage, or Stylo Yeux Waterproof in Eros on its own, or, blend a brown, or taupe shadow over a red base for a smokey eye with just a hint of red.
