Barry Manilow’s performance at Michael Kors was no match for Marc Jacobs’ closing act next door. The latter pulled 50-year-old supermodel Christy Turlington out of retirement to close his Fall 19 show at Park Avenue Armory in New York City tonight.

Following Donatella’s Versace’s lead – the designer cast fellow supers Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer and Carla Bruna in her 20th anniversary show in 2017 – Jacobs brought Turlington to the people. The appearance marked her first on the runway in over 20 years, the last time she walked for Jacobs was in 1993 (remember the Perry Ellis grunge collection?). As stunning as the day she left us hanging onto her last heart-thumping stomp in the 1990s, Turlington wore a black, feathered ballgown and leather boots.

In an interview with Iman in 2015, Turlington explained why she gave up modelling. “I thought about it for a long time, and I guess I really haven’t fully given modelling up, but in my mind I did, because I went back to school and moved on in my life,” she said. “And when I went back to school, same thing. I remember somebody telling me that they were in a location van and they saw me walk by with my backpack, and they were like, ‘Oh, poor thing.’ And I’m thinking ‘Poor thing? I’m getting my education, you fools.’”
