Much like Carrie Bradshaw knows good sex, Max May knows good makeup.

In fact, he’s so proficient with (blush) brush in hand, he is the first choice for the fussiest and finicky folk going around; fashion people (breath in, breath out). As too one of the leader’s of Highpoint’s anticipated Architects of Beauty event later this week.

You’d be hard pressed to find a beauty aficionado unfamiliar with his work. His canvas’ include the unfairly symmetrical faces of Cheyenne Tozzi, Megan Blake Irwin, Zoe Cross, Jodi Gordon, Jess Gomes and pretty much anyone with the slashie affixture: mega model.

Currently cast under a spell of colour, we’re fixated on all things kaleidoscopic in our beauty orbit. But, executing colour by way of skin, lip and lid is no easy feat. I.e. Crayon-esque calamites and pink eye gone very, very wrong. So, with superhero cape on and flawless complexion in tow, the gloriously bronzed Max May joins our colour crusade.

Like a Beauty Blender, we squeezed Max for all the colour goss; what works, what doesn’t, the usual drill. For a foolproof guide to wearing colour and not looking like unicorn vomit, ride our rainbow with Max below.

What colour trends will we be seeing for the rest of the year? And what is on the way out?
Peach cheeks and eyes, glitter in any and every colour, relaxed red lips, metallic Kohl liners in blues, mint green and maybe smudged around the eyes and glossy lids will all be very strong colour trends. It’s not about what is on the way out rather it’s about playing with colour and having a little fun.

We love breaking rules at Grazia. Are there beauty rules we should be breaking when it comes to colour? Rules are made to be broken. I never play by the rules with makeup. Every skin tone, every person is different and no rule when it comes to makeup works across the board. Makeup is about expressing yourself. Find a colour that attracts you or a feature you want to bring out and experiment!

How do you execute a pink / orange eye properly? (And not look like you’ve been crying) There are several ways. If it’s just one colour you want to use (orange or pink) across the lids then use a nude or bronze/black pencil through the water line to either open the eyes or give the eyes a smoke on the eye effect ridding you of sore or red looking eyes. Another way is to lay your pink or orange shadow down first and blend a bronze or brown shadow around the lash line. This will give the eye some depth and make your eyes look awake!

What are your favourite colour combinations and why? I’m loving all shades of pink, orange, gold/yellow and rose-bronze and metallic eye kohl liners around the eyes for night! Lips and cheeks I’m using a lot of peach and sheer plums.

Are there any colour combinations we should completely steer clear of? Nope! Try colour blocking your lips and cheeks. Or using a contrasting colour to mix it up.

What colours work best on different complexions? Use shades that reflect or contrast against your eye colour for the eyes. Play with lip colours that are that fall in the similar tone as your natural lip colour and use a contrasting cheek colour. Don’t get caught up with skin tone too much. You will know what colours work and don’t. Rules are made to be broken remember?

And lastly, you’re throwing the ultimate beauty slumber party – which three guests would you invite and why? Kylie Jenner, Charlotte Tilbury and my mother – because they are all fearless woman when it comes to breaking the rules.
