Kevin Spacey as J Paul Getty in Ridley Scott’s All The Money In The World. He has been replaced with Christopher Plummer.

It was billed as the sure-fire film to earn Kevin Spacey multiple awards this season. But when actor Anthony Rapp and a string of others publicly claimed the former had sexually harassed him 30 years ago, it was enough for All The Money In The World director Ridley Scott to pull off one of the most unprecedented moves in movie-making history. Scott stood firm and said amid the allegations – and despite the fact the film was just weeks from its premiere release date – he would re-cast and re-shoot Spacey’s scenes.

“I move like lightning,” he said. “You can’t tolerate any kind of behaviour like that. We cannot let one person’s actions affect the good work of all these other people. It’s that simple.” Today, that decision paid off.

Not only was Scott nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Director, Michelle Williams is nominated for Best Actress while Christopher Plummer – the actor who replaced Spacey to play billionaire tycoon J Paul Getty –  is nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Scott, Plummer and the crew had just days to get the scenes shot and edited. In the end, while the movie was scheduled for a December 22 cinema release in the United States, it had to be held back a couple of days. Scott needed to finish the film quickly however for it to be considered ahead of awards season.

Translated: A film that had only finished shooing less than two weeks ago is up for three Golden Globes. And the buzz around the cast controversy will surely be reflected at the box office.

Williams has backed Scott’s decision to replace Spacey with Plummer and says the reshoots is “out little act of trying to right a wrong”. Watch the new trailer cut with Plummer below.
