You know the saying: ‘new year, fresh start’ and all that jazz, but what better way to step into the last year of the awkwardly-labelled twenteens than with the buzz of a new romance?
(Almost as good as getting a piece of Lady Gaga’s enigmatic Bad Romance in Vegas, Celine Dion-style. There’s one that belongs on our 2019 bucket list.)
For one shock new A-list celebrity coupling to happen over the new year period is a tabloid gossip gift, but three young star romances – we’re talking milliennal Oscar nominees, an MTV Video Award winner and the style icon offspring of Hollywood royalty – to crop up simultaneously?
Unpredictable love is alive. It’s going to be a good year.
RITA ORA + ANDREW GARFIELD
Right about the same time British songstress Rita Ora wowed Sydney’s A-list at the pre-Christmas Precious Garage 2018 Cartier Party (aka the Australian fashion circuit’s party of the year), it’s reported she began the ‘early stages’ of a relationship with Spiderman actor Andrew Garfield.
Apparently, she let news of their blossoming coupledom slip to some close friends, who then let slip to the media. Notoriously private Garfield, 35, clearly didn’t mind though, given he was then spotted walking arm in arm with Ora, 28, through Primrose Hill in London just days before Christmas.
“It is still very early days but they like each other and are seeing what happens,” a so-called friend told British newspaper The Sun. “Their schedules make things difficult but they have a real connection.”
Ora has previously dated Calvin Harris and Andrew Watt. Garfield famously engaged in a long-running on-off relationship with Oscar-winner Emma Stone. They’re not Insta-official yet, but could this be the highest profile celebrity pairing of 2019? Watch this space.
JAKE GYLLENHAAL + JEANNE CADIeU
He’s a 38-year-old BAFTA-winning Hollywood superstar. She’s a beautiful, in-demand French model aged just 22. Though not technically ‘new’ (rumour suggests they’ve been together for over six months) Jake Gyllenhaal and Jeanne Cadieu were finally photographed arm-in-arm as a couple in New York City right before Christmas. They’re also said to have holidays together in Greece and Britain late last year.
So guarded they’re not yet Instagram official (Gyllenhaal only joined Instagram at the start of December, so perhaps he’s taking his time) there’s no question they’re a couple – and a picturesque one at that. (See her KULT Australian modelling agency card including stats here.)
“Jeanne is very mature for her age. She’s quirky, smart and loves history, reading. She’s a really great and well-rounded person,” a source supposedly close to the couple told American news outlet US Weekly. “She and Jake really took things slow but are now pretty serious.”
Could the actor, who’s famously dated a string of high-profile beauties over the past two decades including Reece Witherspoon, Natalie Portman, Rachel McAdams, Anna Kendrick, Kirsten Dunst and of course, Taylor Swift (a short-lived affair no-one can forget, especially after she wrote hit song ‘Never, Ever Getting Back together’ about him), have found the ideal down-to-earth woman? Only time will tell…

Timothee Chalamet + Lily Rose Depp
While this pair might not have papparazi following them down streets like the couples above, their celebrity pedigree leaves the rest for dust.
Depp, the model daughter of French star Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp who is a face of Chanel, is dating Timothee Chalamet, fast becoming an acting critic favourite after acclaimed starring roles in Call Me By Your Name with Armie Hammer, Lady Bird with Saoirse Ronan and Beautiful Boy with Steve Carrell.
The cute young couple even share a continental heritage: Depp, 19, grew up in France and speaks French as her first language, while New York-born Chalamet’s grandparents are French and he spent many-a-summer there in his youth.
And yes, the 23-year-old who graduated from the star-studded LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing in New York speaks fluent French, too.
There’s a high likelihood you’ll see these two arrive together on the Oscars red carpet this month, if not the MET Gala. We’re calling it first…
