July 4 marks a special date for David and Victoria Beckham who this year celebrate 18 years of marriage. While each have posted cute throwback photos to one another to mark the occasion – (David captioned his: “Wow we really did this. Happy anniversary to an amazing wife, mummy and strong business woman. Love you x”) – it was the couple’s children who had the sweetest things to say about their parents, namely Cruz.

FROM BROOKLYN, 18: “Happy anniversary to two of the most amazing people in my life. Love you Mum and Dad”

FROM ROMEO, 14: “Happy anniversary to the best parents in the world!!! Love you so much”

FROM CRUZ, 12: “Dream mum and dad. I can’t believe it has been 18 years, happy anniversary. I love you so much and I want you to know that you are the best parents in the whole wide world, I love you.”

Victoria and David Beckham met in the Manchester United players’ lounge in the 90s, although Victoria (or Posh Spice as she was known then) admitted to British Vogue the details are a little hazy due to the amount of drinks consumed. “While the other football players stand at the bar drinking with their mates, you will see David standing aside with his family. (He’s not even in the first team at this stage—you are the famous one),” she wrote in a letter to herself in the publication. “And he has such a cute smile. You, too, are close to your family, and you will think how similar he feels to you. He’s going to ask for your number. (He still has the London-to-Manchester plane ticket on which you wrote it.)”.

The pair married on the 4th July 1999.

While held up as #CoupleGoals across the internet today, the lauded marriage wasn’t always so. In 2004, the Beckhams were at the centre of a cheating scandal as David’s personal assistant, then-26-year-old Rebecca Loos, was accused of having an affair with the Real Madrid footballer. After being fired, she sold her story to British publication News Of The World where she allegedly admitted to sleeping with David – and detailed the explosive texts from him –  something he vehemently claimed to be “ludicrous”. “I think the problems were in their marriage long before I came into the picture,” Loos told Sky TV’s Kay Burley. “I in no way intended to break up their marriage especially when there are young children involved. I hope they stay together.”

Of the texting, Loos said, “[David] always instigated it, I would never be the first to text. You have to remember he is a married man. What if he is at lunch with Victoria? You have to wait for him.”

Then, a second woman came forward claiming she too had an affair with the popstar’s husband. Irrespective of all the allegations, Victoria stood by David. After all, they had two young sons, Brooklyn and Romeo, and would go on to have a third son Cruz in 2005 and a daughter named Harper in 2011. Together, they built the Beckham empire and today are estimated to be worth hundreds of millions.
