Like the circus, “where beauty, origin, gender and age are no longer important, and only technique and daring matter,” strong women were at the core of Dior’s Couture Spring 2019 show in Paris, much the same as past seasons under Maria Grazia Chiuri.
The quote above was direct from Chiuri’s show notes as she cast many a female acrobat in Dior’s show on Monday, each twisting and braiding their robust bodies into many a formation for the models to walk through under the guise of a circus show.“In a circus parade, it is not just about being beautiful, it is about being proud, about being strong, about being bold and having fun,” she told The Guardian backstage. Just like past collections (Chiuri cast female rodeo riders for her Cruise 2019 show and modern dancers for her Spring 2019 show) there was a big nod towards the power of the woman, in all her femininity and simultaneous strength.
Beyond the eye-popping bonnets, sparkling boots, candy-striped pleated skirts and voluminous sleeves, sat some of fashion and film’s most bold and interesting.
