In a rare sighting of Emily Ratajkowski fully clothed (bar a saucy leg reveal), the model’s rather modest rehashing of the asymmetrical stripe has us all excited again. Why? It’s the ultimate in fashion flattery (when cut right). And cut right it was, thanks to Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim of New York label, MONSE (also the designers behind Oscar de la Renta).

Taking the streets of New York in the bias cut, candy-striped frock, Rata is living proof that a well-placed stripe is as good as gold in fashion. Against a creamy backdrop, the orange stripe followed the body’s natural curve, boldly refuting any kind of “stripes across the body make you look fat” kind of argument, which lays claim to linear horizontal stripes (one of the most feared fashion practises of all). Instead, tracking the curvature of the female form gives the illusion of continuity, a kind of flattering fluidity which follows your lady lumps with joy.

Add a single power shoulder, oversized cuff, deft fringing and glorious ruching, and it’s a most complementary combo.

The rest of Emily Ratajkowski’s look was kept painfully simple; an incognito nude stiletto and simple stud earring, with beauty notes too remaining minimal, finger-raked hair and rosy cheeks.

As for the exact MONSE dress, it’s currently available on Moda Operandi for pre-order (today is the last day!). But if patience isn’t your thing, replicate the look with similar stripy styles from the designer that flatter and still look mighty fashionable – and are on sale at Vestiaire Collective. Now go forth and earn your (Monse) stripes.
