Cast your mind back to 2015. Even 2016. We were wearing slips and chokers, printed bombers, Adidas Stan Smiths, off-the-shoulder everything. There was a lot of millennial pink. We’d just discovered masking (thanks, Korea) and all of a sudden fluffy slippers outside the house were acceptable thanks to Gucci.

We were also tucking our hair into our jacket. Our coat. Our collars. Yes, the “hair tuck”, the hair trend that was seen on every street between Paris and New York was the hairstyle du jour. To the ill-informed, it seemed a scandalous fashion (and beauty) faux pas – had she got dressed and forget to pull out her hair from her Burberry trench? Eek! But, for the initiated (and those with fashionable sensibilities), it was a considered and purposeful move – not an I-can’t-be-bothered moment.

And last night at GQ’s Man Of The Year awards in Sydney, Emily Ratajkowski brought back the hair tuck the only way she knows how – with a lot of sex and sass. Insouciantly tucked into her Paco Rabanne geometric shrug (which was cropped high up to her infamous bosom and showed A LOT of ab), her glossy dark brown mane spilled over its high neck just slightly.

A bit messy through the mid-lengths and choppy where it counts, the trick to the half-tuck is a little texture, a little nonchalance and a lot of attitude. Don’t sweat the small stuff; a few stray strands make it all the more irreverent.

A surefire way to achieve cool-girl strands, the tuck is back. Thanks Emily Ratajkowski.
