The designer Emma Mulholland knows how to holiday, of this much we can be certain. While Mulholland’s second sun-soaked label, Holiday The Label, is proof as much, her holiday wish list reveals that she also knows how to shop for the holidays too, particularly for goods emblematic of her singular style.
Think a pair of ghostly pearl drop earrings from the Korean-Italian jewellery brand Jiwinaia; an irreverent take on classic Prada nylon wrought anew in an oversize neon pink silhouette; or a mirror that highlights the generation-defining aesthetic of the Italian designer Ettore Sottsass and his 1980s design collective, the Memphis Group, who became leaders in the Postmodern design movement that later ushered in the New Wave. Though some might find this injection moulded plastic and neon mirror crosses well over into kitsch territory (and prohibitively expensive), it’s the perfect accompaniment to a sunglasses collaboration Mulholland launched this year in conjunction with the label, Local Supply.
“It’s been a busy year!” Muholland says, reflecting on the year to date. “I loved working with a bunch of amazing people for my zine [and] postcard project and also my new sunglasses collaboration with Local Supply.” Shooting the campaign required that Mulholland assemble a crew of some her favourite people “on a lovely sunny day” – a feat she will no doubt be hoping to emulate over the holiday season. Though the designer has lived in Sydney for over 10 years now, she says she has never managed to spend a Christmas here. The remedy? Time spent swimming, eating, drinking and dancing with family in Tamarama, including – amongst many others, no doubt – the nephew born the night before her 30th birthday. His arrival, she says, is chief amongst the most special of gifts that she has ever received. As for the greatest gift she has ever given, Mulholland recalls making her “niece and nephew shark and dolphin toys out of Holiday fabric, which turned out pretty cool.” No surprises there.
