A few days after Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling received Oscar nominations for their roles in La La Land, the New York Post published a story claiming that Emma Watson and Miles Teller were “furious” at their agents. A source said they’d been approached to play the leads in the film but for various reasons had not signed on.

Whether Emma has second guessed her decision to turn down director Damien Chazelle’s offer to star in the critically acclaimed musical we may never know for sure, but she opened up about her reasons in an interview with SiriusXM.

“It’s one of these frustrating things where sort of names get attached to projects very early on as a way to kind of build anticipation or excitement for something that’s coming before anything is really actually agreed or set in stone,” she said.

The Brit said her commitment to the live-action remake of Beauty And The Beast, which was filmed in London, made it impossible to do both projects.

“I knew I had horse training, I knew I had dancing, I knew I had three months of singing ahead of me, and I knew I had to be in London to really do that,” said Watson. “And this wasn’t a movie I could just kind of parachute into. I knew I had to do the work, and I had to be where I had to be. So scheduling conflict-wise, it just didn’t work out.”

Emma was more measured in her response that Teller, who revealed his frustration at being passed over for the role in an interview with Esquire.

“I got a call from my agent, saying, ‘Hey, I just got a call from Lionsgate. Damien told them that he no longer thinks you’re creatively right for the project. He’s moving on without you.’”

He added he wrote Chazelle a text that said “What the f—, bro?”, something we can’t imagine Emma sending even to her worst enemy.
