Much like the red lip, the smokey eye has has countless iterations, reimagined over and over again with newfound fervour and flair. Puddles of black. Smudged soot. Streamlined noir. Chalky kohl. In short, the smokey eye is one of the most beloved looks of beauty.

Trust Chanel, then, to take the humble smokey eye and take it to the big (midnight) blue. At the Métiers D’Art show in Hamburg last week, eyes were not washed in black – the usual suspect – instead, eyes were flooded in blue, a silvery midnight blue. It was a clever combination of Chanel eye palettes from the new Neapolis collection, and blended both atop and under the eye made for a striking proposition. Part charcoal, part blue and slightly violet in character; this inspired take on the smokey eye is far less obtrusive than heavy black, and the perfect option for those willing to try a heavy smoke (without the blackout).

Here, a visual narrative on how to get Chanel’s smokey eye, with a bolt from the blue.
