There are always a few key topics that dominate each award season’s narrative. There are the shocks (oh, Bradley) the surprises (hello, Green Book) and the meme-making moments (go forth, Fiji Water girl) that cause a stir but disperse by the time February comes to a close. But this year there was a surprise breakout star whose moment won’t fade – Lucy Boynton’s eyelashes. The Bohemian Rhapsody star captivated us on every red carpet by accessorising every one of her adventurous makeup looks with a set of spidery lashes. Her commitment to the cause was truly inspirational.

No doubt Boynton’s makeup artist, Jo Baker, was inspired by the sudden elevated lash appreciation happening at Fashion Week. Known for creating some of the most magical moments in makeup history, Pat McGrath outdid herself at Valentino Spring Couture 19 when she lined the models’ eyes with fantastical feather lashes that fluttered as they took to the runway in Pierpaolo Piccioli’s breathtaking collection. McGrath’s next-level lash obsession tracks back to the Spring / Summer 19 season, where she sent models down the Prada runway with lashings of mascara worthy of Twiggy status. Peter Philips got the ’60s memo too, painstakingly painting “little rectangles under the eye” with trompe l’oeil effect for Dior Fall / Winter 19.

From mod-inspired to fantastical reverie, stepped-up eyelashes are fast becoming the new-season makeup trend to master. Start by layering mascara on thick, never abandoning your bottom set, or try spider-length lashes for one night only. If you want to break away from black, may we suggest Lupita Nyong’o as your muse? The actress continues to prove the wearability of colourful mascara, most recently choosing cobalt at this year’s Golden Globes. However you choose to elevate your lashes, be sure to go big. Oh, and if you go really big, go waterproof, too. Lucy wouldn’t approve of flakes.
