It takes a true make-up master to reinvent classic red lipstick for the runway, but fashion week veteran, Val Garland was up to the challenge. While the looks she creates for designer Giambattisa Valli have sat on the daring side season’s past (glitter eyebrows, anyone?) she shifted gears for his Spring/Summer 2017 show opting for matte, polished skin. The only colour came via some girls – including show standout Gigi Hadid – getting the tomato red lipstick.
While red lipstick can throw retro vibes or look super prim and polished, Garland’s tomato pouts had a youthful je ne sais quoi quality, perfect for their Parisian setting. So how to emulate the young and fresh red lipstick moves yourself? We delved deeper and dissected this breakout beauty look bit by bit to assist your DIY efforts.
FIRST, GET RED-DY
Garland used a combination of M.A.C. Retro Matte Liquid Lip Color in Feels So Grand, and Velvetease Lip Pencil in Just Add Romance on a handful of girl’s lips backstage at Giambattisa Valli. While there are plenty tricks to finding the perfect red lipstick shade to suit your skin tone, Garland opted for a universally flattering true tomato shade.
Buff it out
After precisely painting Gigi Hadid and friend’s lips backstage, Garland used a softer, fluffier brush around the edges to soften the line for an undone look.
Brighten your eyes
While the skin was relatively matte, polished and pared-back on closer inspection there was one point of distinction –the waterline. Fresh flesh tones and nudes brightened up the girl’s eyes, a welcome addition as they come to the end of Fashion Month.
Finally, Embrace the barely-there hair
Paul Hanlon let the hair take a backseat backstage, having the girls tuck their centre-parted, air-dried bends behind their ears for a laidback, imperfect appeal.
